Filmmaking 102 for grades 6–8 (Spring'26)

$375.00

Filmmaking 102 is the next step for students who have completed Intro to Film or already understand the basics of camera, sound, and storytelling. In this advanced 10-week course, students move beyond fundamentals and begin thinking like real filmmakers—developing stronger stories, working in production teams, and creating films with style, intention, and impact.

Working collaboratively in small crews, students will dive deeper into the filmmaking process:

  • Story & Development – Students will learn how to craft compelling narratives, develop characters, pitch ideas, and structure stories using cinematic techniques. They’ll explore both narrative and documentary storytelling.

  • Advanced Production – Students will experiment with camera movement, visual style, lighting design, directing actors, and capturing high-quality sound. They’ll rotate through professional film roles such as director, cinematographer, sound recordist, and producer.

  • Editing & Post-Production (New Focus) – In Film 102, students go beyond basic editing and learn how editing shapes story and emotion. They’ll work with more advanced editing tools, pacing, transitions, sound design, music, and visual storytelling—learning how to transform raw footage into a compelling film.

  • Creative Collaboration – Unlike Film 101, students will operate as real film crews, learning how to plan shoots, solve problems on set, and bring a shared creative vision to life.

  • Final Films & SMFA Screening – Students will refine their projects and present original short films at a South Mountain Film Academy screening for families and friends.

By the end of the course, students will produce original short films that reflect their unique voices and growing technical and creative skills. Filmmaking 102 is ideal for young storytellers ready to take creative risks, collaborate at a higher level, and experience what it’s like to work on a real film set.

Tuesdays from April 7–June 9, 2026, 6:00 PM–7:15 PM

Grades: 6th, 7th, 8th
